To me, one of the best ways to stay true to yourself is to have your home, room, or dorm room reflect your personality. Your space is  very important to your creativity. It is the place you feel most comfortable and free. So create your space with all the things that you love. If I were to create a room from scratch I would take the following steps:

1) Choose a Theme: bohemian, girly chic, retro glamour... whatever it may be i'd decide upon a specific feel I wanted the space to reflect

2) Choose Furniture: Choose pieces of furniture that you feel fit your theme

3) Acquire Accessories: Go around town to little home decor boutiques, vintage/antique stores, and the mega-stores (Pier 1, World Market, Z Gallerie, etc.) and find pieces that pull the theme out of your furniture. For example: rugs, candles, lamps or chandeliers, picture frames, art, etc.

4) Make the Space personal: Finally make the space your own. Put picture collages of you and your life up on the walls. Find art that reminds you of places you want to go or people you admire. Make sure the room inspires you to stay true to yourself and your dreams.
